Product Profile: Sunflower, Silk & Shea Hand & Body Cream

This week I’m profiling our Sunflower, Silk & Shea Hand & Body Cream, our second most popular product, following close on the heels of SunSoap.

This deliciously decadent lotion is made from – as you might imagine from the name – sunflower oil, shea butter, and silk proteins. But we don’t stop there! We also add cocoa butter, avocado oil, jojoba oil, evening primrose oil, rose hip oil, and a bit of extra vitamin E. All told, this cream contains vitamins A, B, C, and E – it’s loaded with antioxidants and other skin-nourishing goodness, on top of the moisturizing qualities! Other ingredients include emulsifying wax (see yesterday’s post), stearic acid (no, not that kind of acid; it’s a vegetable-derived fatty acid used in this case to make the lotion thicker and richer), and a paraben-free preservative to make sure no yucky stuff grows in the lotion.

To make this lotion (simplified for brevity), I heat both the water and oil phases, then pour the water into the oil, mix thoroughly, and let it cool. At this point, I either add fragrance and dispense it into bottles, or leave it unscented in bulk for later use. I usually use gallon-size jugs to store my bulk batches of lotion, and add fragrance to smaller quantities as needed.

So, what makes this lotion better than others? See above for our list of skin-loving ingredients, present at a much higher proportion (relative to the water phase) than in many commercial lotions. Also, it is gentle on sensitive skin, absorbs easily without leaving you feeling greasy afterward, and the moisturizing effect will last for hours under most circumstances! It’s great for hands, body, and I even use it as a face cream.

Paraben-free! Also the aluminum bottle is recyclable, or, if you prefer, we also offer refills.
